Silhouette

Staging that places a person in front of a bright background or strong backlight with no light on the front, so they appear only as a dark shape. The face and expression disappear, leaving only posture and outline, which is used to hide identity or create symbolic scenes.

Lighting positions seen from above. Only a weak light comes from right behind the character, with no light in front. The background is kept bright.
Camera view. Only the black outline of big ears and a round head shows against the bright background.

    Not to be confused with

    Backlight / Rim Light
Backlight is the light’s position; silhouette is the result when there is no light on the front and the person looks black. Add front light to backlight and you get a backlit portrait with a visible face.
    Low-key
In low-key, part of the face catches light and shows; in a silhouette, almost none does.
